Join the Virtual Rally via Instagram

Instagram is a photo-based application designed for use on a mobile phone. It's easy to set up an Instagram account and doing so will allow you to post a photo of our virtual rally graphic, grabbing the attention of elected leaders in a new way.

Getting started

To install Instagram on your mobile phone, open Google or Safari and type "Instagram" into the search box. At the Instagram site, click on the download button and follow the downloading instructions for your phone.

Once the Instagram application is installed on your phone:

  • Click on the Instagram icon
  • To sign up, enter your email address or click "Log in with Facebook"
  • On the next page, click the button titled "+photo" to add a photo of yourself (This is the photo that will show up beside your user name when you post on Instagram.)
  • On the same page, click on "Create a username" and enter your desired username (This is the name that will appear on your Instagram account, by which you will be identified when you post.)
  • The final task on the page is to choose a password

Congrats! You've arrived in the land of Instagram!

Now it's time to find folks you are interested in following. Click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of your page and enter the name of a person, elected official, or organization you want to follow. A list of search results will appear; click on the name you want and when that person's page pops up, click "Follow."

Go back to the search box and enter another name. Some suggestions:

  • Us, of course! (Instagram username: parentscampaign)
  • Friends and family
  • Your church
  • Your school and school district
  • Governor Bryant (Instagram username: philbryantms)
  • Lt. Governor Reeves (Instagram username: tatereeves)
  • Your Legislators (click here for a list of legislators who are on Instagram)

Getting followers

Most of the time, the people you follow will also follow you. Your followers will grow over time, but to gain followers, you must first be a follower!

Remember that Instagram is photo-based, so a post requires a photo. Click on the middle icon at the bottom of the screen. You'll see that your phone is set to take a photo. To post your first Instagram of our #StandUp4PubEd graphic, scroll to the graphic below and save it as an image on your phone. On your Instagram screen, click on the box at the bottom left to see photos from your phone's camera roll. Click on the graphic, then click "Next" at the top right of your screen. The next page will show choices for photo filters; skip this step by clicking "Next" again.

Now you can enter a caption for your photo, which in Instagram serves as your post's message.

Add hashtags to your caption/message. A hashtag is a phrase that begins with the “#” sign and is simply a means of organizing social media posts by topic. Hashtags of interest:

  • #msedu (MS education news)
  • #msleg (MS Legislature news)
  • #All4PubEd (school funding news)
  • #StandUp4PubEd
  • #No2VouchersMS (Virtual Rally hashtag)
  • #ProtectSchoolFunding (Virtual Rally hashtag)

After typing in your caption/message, you can tag people. The people you tag will be notified of your post. Be sure to tag legislators.

Post to Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter With One Click

Instagram allows you to save time and post to several social media sites at once. Before you hit "Share" at the bottom of your Instagram screen, click on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or Tumblr. The same photo and caption/message/hashtags that you post on Instagram will also appear on the other social media sites you've chosen.
